Passionate about Batteries

Marc Juzkow converted his last college internship in 1985 into a full-time research scientist position at an innovative new rechargeable lithium metal battery company in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Moli Energy moved away from rechargeable lithium metal batteries after a series of field failures and began lithium-ion battery development in the late 1980’s. Moli Energy was the first North American company (and 3rd world-wide) to commercialize a lithium-ion 18650 cell in 1994. Along the way, Moli supported Marc in achieving Masters degrees in Chemistry and Business. Following the MBA Marc went to the dark side and built Moli’s new sales and marketing organization.

In 1996, California was calling and Marc moved his family down to Livermore where he worked at PolyStor and PowerStor supercapacitors (sold to Cooper Bussmann and now a product line for Eaton).   In 2003, Marc went on to begin a consulting career that continues today.  Over the years Marc has consulted to: Eagle-Picher, SAFT, Microsoft, Rose Batteries, OM Group (Co mining), Qynergy, Cameron Health and others. Marc developed an asymmetric supercapacitor for heavy equipment engine starting.

After consulting in Albuquerque and Portland every other week for two years, a VP of R&D position came available at Leyden Energy locally in Fremont, CA in 2007.  The company was a victim of the economy and closed its doors in 2014, but only after manufacturing 2M lithium-ion 18650 and pouch cells, completing multiple DOE and CEC contracts, developing 12V lithium titanate batteries, silicon anodes and non-flammable electrolytes.  Marc spring-boarded from Leyden starting a contract services and consulting company, called Iontensity, hiring 3 engineers and 2 technicians from Leyden Energy.  A great business supporting many established companies, including SAFT, Bosch, BASF, Applied Materials, Bloomberg and Flextronics, and all levels of startups.  Most recently Marc has been the lithium-ion cell subject matter expert for a Chinese autonomous EV company, NIO, at their Silicon Valley advanced research facility.  And for Joby Aviation, the leading eVTOL company based in Northern California.

Marc has hired numerous recent grads and interns over the years, and continues to mentor young people interested in this industry that has served him so well in his career.

Marc was very fortunate to find work in an important field that he loves and has no intentions of retiring. Over the last 20 years, he continues to use his wide breadth of battery knowledge in a plurality of consulting roles.

Finally, Marc is grateful to the Nobel Foundation for acknowledging the important work of the scientists (Drs. Goodenough, Whittingham and Yoshino) whose pioneering research provided the foundation for the lithium-ion technology revolution.
